About 60% of Google searches end without a click due to featured snippets, AI Overviews and knowledge panels. Properly configuring meta tags, keywords and titles remains the foundation of site visibility in SERPs.

What are meta tags?

Meta tags are HTML elements in the section that convey information to search engines about the content of a page. They solve three tasks: influence ranking (Title – confirmed on-page factor Google), increase CTR by 8-15% (Title + Description) and help AI systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews) understand the context of the page.

Main types: ranking (Title Tag, Meta Robots, Canonical) CTR (Meta Description, Open Graph) and obsolete (Meta Keywords – ignored by Google since 2009; Yandex can formally take into account, but the practical value is minimal.)

Title tag

Title is a confirmed on-page ranking factor. Optimum length. 50-60 characters. Place the main key in the first 3-5 words, add the trigger (digits, year, “guide”) and, if necessary, the brand through “|”. At the same time, Title is one of many factors, and by itself it will not bring the page to the top without quality content.

Google is changing about 76% Title Title in the issue (SearchEngineLand data, 01.2025). To reduce the likelihood of overwriting, make Title informative, without key spam, and align it with H1 on the topic.

Meta Description

Description does not affect ranking directly, but works as a page advertisement. The recommended length - 130-160 characters. Structure: Brief response to query + value + call to action (CTA). Keywords in the Description stand out bold when coinciding with the user's request.

Google generates its own Description in most cases if your query is irrelevant or contains spam. For commercial pages, always write Description manually, for informational articles with long tails you can leave empty.

Meta Keywords

Meta keywords not necessary for Google The tag has not been counted since 2009. Yandex can formally consider meta keywords as a weak factor, but its practical value is minimal. If you use it, limit yourself to 5-10 relevant phrases. Instead of keywords, focus on Title, Description, Headings and Schema.org- markup.

Headings H1-H4

Titles form a hierarchical structure of content. For search engines, this is a semantic page map, for users – navigation.

Rules:

  • One H1 to the main key page (40-70 characters)

  • H1 does not duplicate Title verbatim, but coincides thematically

  • Hierarchy without passes: H1 → H2 → H3 → H4

  • 6-10 H2 For long articles, each reveals a separate aspect of the topic.

  • H4 – only for complex content with deep detail

The main key should be in H1, in 2-3 headers H2-H3 - variations and LSI-keys. Most high ranking pages contain target keys in H1-H2 headers.

Keyword density

There is no single standard of density – sources recommend 0.5% to 2%. For 2,000-word text, it’s 10 to 20 entry points, including Titles, headlines, and alt attributes. The best benchmark is to analyze competitors from the top 10 at your request.

Critical locations: Title (at the beginning), H1, first paragraph (first 100-150 words), H2-H3, Meta Description, image alt, URL. In addition, use 3-5 LSI keys for 2-3 logins each.

Density above 5% is regarded as keyword stuffing and threatens sanctions. Google analyzes semantics and context through the algorithms Hummingbird (2013), RankBrain (2015), BERT (2019) – more important than thematic completeness, intent satisfaction and E-E-A-T signals.

Checklist

  • 50–60 characters, key at the beginning, trigger, uniqueness

  • Description: 130-160 characters, CTA, 1-2 key entry

  • H1: one per page, main key, no duplicate Title

  • Hierarchy H1 → H2 → H3 → H4 without level skips

  • Key density 0.5–2%, LSI synonyms, no spam

  • Meta keywords: for Google – can be deleted; for Yandex – 5-10 phrases (optional)

  • Canonical, Open Graph and Robots are configured correctly

Important: Meta tags are only part of SEO. For high positions, a comprehensive approach is needed: quality content, reference profile, technical optimization and behavioral factors.
