About 60% of Google search queries end without a click due to featured snippets, AI Overviews and knowledge panels. Proper configuration of meta tags, keywords and headings remains the foundation of website visibility in search results.

What are meta tags

Meta tags are HTML elements in the <head> section that provide search engines with information about the page content. They solve three tasks: influence rankings (Title is a confirmed Google on-page factor ), increase CTR by 8–15% (Title + Description) and help AI systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews) understand the page context.

Main types: ranking (Title Tag, Meta Robots, Canonical), for CTR (Meta Description, Open Graph) and obsolete (Meta Keywords – ignored by Google since 2009; Yandex may formally consider it, but the practical value is minimal).

Title Tag

Title – a confirmed on-page ranking factor. Optimal length – 50–60 characters. Place the main keyword in the first 3–5 words, add a trigger (numbers, year, "guide") and, if necessary, the brand using "|". At the same time, Title is one of many factors, and by itself it will not bring the page to the top without quality content.

Example: <title>Website SEO promotion: 15 working methods in 2026</title>

Google changes about 76% of Titles in search results (SearchEngineLand data, 01.2025). To reduce the probability of rewriting, make the Title informative, without keyword stuffing, and align it with H1 by topic.

Meta Description

Description does not affect ranking directly, but works as an ad for the page. Recommended length – 130–160 characters. Structure: brief answer to the query + value + call to action (CTA). Keywords in the Description are highlighted in bold when they match the user's query.

Google generates its own Description in most cases if yours is irrelevant to the query or contains keyword stuffing. For commercial pages, always write the Description manually; for informational articles with long-tail keywords, it can be left empty.

Meta Keywords

Meta keywords is unnecessary for Google – the tag has been ignored since 2009. Yandex may formally consider meta keywords as a weak factor, but its practical value is minimal. If you use it – limit yourself to 5–10 relevant phrases. Instead of keywords, focus on Title, Description, headings and Schema.org-markup.

H1-H4 headings

Headings form the hierarchical structure of the content. For search engines – it is a semantic map of the page, for users – navigation.

Rules:

  • One H1 per page with the main keyword (40–70 characters)
  • H1 does not duplicate the Title word for word, but matches thematically
  • Hierarchy without gaps: H1 → H2 → H3 → H4
  • 6–10 H2 for long articles, each covering a separate aspect of the topic
  • H4 – only for complex content with deep detailing

The main keyword should be in H1, in 2–3 H2-H3 headings – variations and LSI keywords. Most high-ranking pages contain target keywords in H1-H2 headings.

Keyword density

There is no single density standard – sources recommend from 0.5% to 2%. For a 2000-word text, this is 10–20 occurrences, including Title, headings, alt attributes. The best guideline is analyzing top-10 competitors for your query.

Critical placement locations: Title (at the beginning), H1, first paragraph (first 100–150 words), H2-H3, Meta Description, image alt attributes, URL. Additionally, use 3–5 LSI keywords with 2–3 occurrences each.

Density above 5% is considered keyword stuffing and risks penalties. Google analyzes semantics and context thanks to the Hummingbird (2013), RankBrain (2015), and BERT (2019) algorithms – topical completeness, intent satisfaction, and E-E-A-T signals are more important.

Checklist

  • Title: 50–60 characters, keyword at the beginning, trigger, uniqueness
  • Description: 130–160 characters, CTA, 1–2 keyword occurrences
  • H1: one per page, main keyword, does not duplicate Title
  • Hierarchy H1 → H2 → H3 → H4 without skipping levels
  • Keyword density 0.5–2%, LSI synonyms, no keyword stuffing
  • Meta keywords: for Google – can be removed; for Yandex – 5–10 phrases (optional)
  • Canonical, Open Graph and Robots are configured correctly

Important: meta tags are just a part of SEO. For high rankings, a comprehensive approach is required: quality content, backlink profile, technical optimization and user behavior signals.

How to prove website expertise to AI models: analyzing author pages

Content factories sell the same idea: automate generation, and traffic will come on its own. I see the result of this approach every time I open search results for a commercial topic. The same text, recycled ten times in a row, without a single new fact. I break down why this stopped working, what search engines actually check, and why we need author pages on the website.
